Understanding the Best Interests of the Child Test

Recorded on April 17, 2014 - All custody and access decisions are made using the best interests of the child test, as set out in section 24 of the Children's Law Reform Act. The test has a number of factors that judges are required to consider in making decisions about custody and access. This webinar examines each factor in the context of a case involving violence against women and makes suggestions for frontline workers about evidence a woman can use to support her application for custody of her children. Victim Impact Statements in Canada: Past, Present, and Future

Asking for money from the Huronia, Rideau, and Southwestern Regional Centre class action settlements

Recorded on March 31, 2014 - There were three class action lawsuits about abuse of people labeled with intellectual disabilities who lived at the Huronia, Rideau, and Southwestern Regional Centres. Those lawsuits have now settled and there is money for some people who lived there. They must file a Claim Form to ask for this money. Family members and support persons may fill in the form for them. There will be only 120 days to file the Claim Form once the claims process begins. This webinar reviews the claims process, how to fill in the Claim Form, and issues that may come up when filling in the Claim Form. For more information visit:

Supporting an Abused Woman to Get a Restraining Order

This webinar discusses what a restraining order is and looks briefly at other approaches to keeping an abuser away from his former partner. It provides tips for frontline workers about how and where women can gather evidence to support their application and some suggestions about related safety planning both before and after the restraining order is obtained.
